“Everyone’s Uncle Theo
Who entered into the Catholic Clergy
He cut off all the hoods of his brothers’ cassocks
And there is that One
Who lives alone up in His tree
A sentinel to shout my return
What makes him do it, does Döder make him do it?”

SCAC Gothic WesternMunly & the Lupercalians is part of the Slim Cessna’s Auto Club extended Gothic Americana universe that has issued its curious apocalyptic vision on the fringes of the Denver music scene since the early ‘90s, led by the elusive Jayson Thompson, aka Jay Munly, aka Munly Munly or simply Munly.

The album has a rich sound with a number of excellent textures. The percussion is busy, providing a solid foundation to the songs. The acoustic guitars, banjo, and cello sound awesome in turns, as does the piano, synth, and melodica. There’s even a distinct bass sound, but I’m not sure if it’s a bass, synth, or something else entirely. Whatever it is, it does a great job of holding down the groove alongside the drums while the various counter melodies and rhythms play out around it. Munly’s vocals sound deep and brooding, recalling his stellar performance with the Lee Lewis Harlots.
