Big Kill (2019) – Retro Western

Big Kill - Retro Western

Jason Patric, Lou Diamond Phillips, Scott Martin, Danny Trejo and Michael Paré are in Big Kill, a story about a tenderfoot from Philadelphia, two misfit gamblers on the run, and a deadly preacher who have a date with destiny in a boom town gone bust called Big Kill. After the death of his wife, Jim, the accountant, has come from the East to join his brother in business. Jake and Travis, two misfit rogues with one foot on each side of the law, have come from the south after being run out of Mexico under a hail of gunfire. What they find in this retro Western is a wild ride, a fight for survival, and a moment of decision that will change them all forever.

Here’s what some media outlets say about Big Kill:

LA Times: Filmmaker Martin can’t seem to decide whether he’s making a tribute or a send-up, and the overlong, yet under-plotted, results, with awkward close-ups and prolonged, flatly delivered exchanges, take their toll. Those timeless New Mexico backdrops may lend the production its desired authenticity, but all those structural wide-open spaces stop “Big Kill” dead in its tedious tracks.

Variety: “Big Kill” never tilts toward meta self-awareness or wink-wink homage. Indeed, the movie as whole takes its cue from the engaging sincerity of Andrews’ portrayal of Jim Andrews as decent fellow who reluctantly accepts the notion, like so many protagonists in so many other Westerns, that, when push comes to shove, a man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.
