There is a new Marilyn Manson Gothic Western video for his new single ‘God’s Gonna Cut You Down’. The cinematic clip is filled with guns and religious imagery, shot beautifully in the desert. Manson reunited with director Tim Mattia for the cinematic black-and-white video filmed in Joshua Tree, California and opens on Manson alone in a cabin, cradling his guitar. He later swaps the instrument for a shotgun, and heads out to start digging a grave.
“God’s Gonna Cut You Down” was recorded with producer Tyler Bates, with whom the shock rocker collaborated on his last two records, 2015’s “The Pale Emperor” and 2017’s “Heaven Upside Down”. The track is a Marilyn Manson Gothic Western take on the traditional folk song of the same name. The song has been recorded by various legends over the years, including Elvis Presley (under the title “Run On”) and Bobbie Gentry (as “Sermon.”) Johnny Cash, however, popularized the track into the public zeitgeist, recording an equally dark “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” in 2003. It was posthumously released in 2006 to mass acclaim.
Manson recorded “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” for the 24 Hours to Live soundtrack, which came out in 2017. Marilyn Manson has spent the last few months collaborating with country rocker Shooter Jennings on his new studio album, tentatively due in early 2020. Manson and Jennings previously teamed up in 2016 to record a cover version of “Cat People (Putting Out Fire)” for Jennings’s “Countach (For Giorgio)” LP, a covers collection featuring songs by electronic-music pioneer Giorgio Moroder.
The song is available to pre-order now on limited-pressing picture disc featuring one of Manson’s original watercolor paintings. Manson is launching a mini-tour in San Antonio on October 24. He plans to stop in Dallas, Oklahoma City, Denver, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and Anaheim before wrapping in Phoenix on November 3. You can pre-order Manson’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” vinyl here.
